Comments: Patrick is a smart kid and a good programmer. He works really hard to get the product that is given to him. With my project (quite complicated), he was not able to complete it, in the end. I paid him anyway since he worked so hard at it and he did get a working version, though not to spec. Basically I would spell out the specs as clearly as possible and try to confirm that he has necessary expertise before assigning him the project.
