Calligraphy: A Rediscovered Art

In a world of instant text and emails it is comforting to know a more leisurely form of communication has survived. Calligraphy is a skill acquired through patience and practice. If aesthetics are important then calligraphy is a skill to be considered.

Calligraphy means beautiful handwriting. The student learns how to become skilled at the ancient craft of penmanship. It is the art of elegant handwriting. All that is needed to accomplish this ancient skill is enthusiasm.

Five hundred years ago, books were very precious. Scribes were specialists who used a quill and ink to write on parchment. Usually, this was done in a scriptorium or writing room of a monastery. Surviving script from that time is viewed as beautiful art.

The illumination of the first letter on a page was developed in medieval times. Scribes made the letter larger and colorful. The technique for the first letter was more intricate. Creativity is paramount in Western calligraphy. The skilled calligrapher crafts letters to be unusual and unique.

In modern society, three styles of calligraphy are taught and learned:

• Western or Roman
• Chinese or Oriental
• Arabic

This book concentrates on the Western or Roman style. Western calligraphy uses the Roman alphabet. This alphabet is six hundred years old. Roman Calligraphy developed into three main groups of script:

• Carolingian
• Gutenberg
• Gothic

To get started, some writing equipment is needed. The basic tools of a calligrapher are:

• porous paper
• lined paper
• brushes
• pens
• inks

The artistic presentation of script is taught using techniques. In this book, they are separated into sections. The alphabet is divided into the lower and upper case. Each letter of the alphabet is explained. The next section covers the three main scripts. Beginners to calligraphy can be certain that practice makes beautiful handwriting.
