I have worked in the IT industry since 2001. Currently I focus on web application development and web application security. The latter necessarily includes securing the underlying layers as well, in particular the operating system, the database engine and the web server software. I have been developing software in various programming languages since I was a teenager, starting with small programs written in BASIC and Turbo Pascal and extending my skills ever since. Nowadays, as I focus on developing web applications, PHP and Java are my favorite programming languages and those I'm most experienced with, but I'm also quite familiar with Perl and Ruby. A significant part of my web application related work focuses on the WordPress blog engine. With the exception of web design, I have thorough experience with all the aspects of installing and maintaining a WordPress site: the installation and customization of WordPress with its themes and plugins, the optimization for performance ("tuning") and security ("hardening"), and (occasionally) some tweaking of the code. I'm a Linux enthusiast (aka a "geek") since my very first encounter with Linux back in 1995. I've become a seasoned system administrator during my university studies, when I took care of various Linux servers at the university data center. I have been administrating Linux servers ever since and I could refine my skills on many challenging projects. Besides all the "technical stuff", I have successfully completed several translation and copywriting projects here on GetAFreelancer. Being a native speaker of German with a strong background in English due to my university studies in the USA, that's another interesting opportunity for me, quite unrelated to everything else I've done so far.
