Description

We want to set up a Linux box to act as a mass storage disk server (“mass storage device”), but using firewire instead of USB. The Linux box has a large hard drive, and a firewire port. When a standard Windows XP or Vista PC is connected to this Linux box via a firewire cable, we want a mass storage device to appear under Windows XP or Vista. This requires that the Linux box emulate a mass storage device, much like an external firewire hard drive or an iPod in mass storage mode.

For more information, see the attached .pdf file.

I have over 15 years of Linux expirence starting with Slackware 1.0 including managing the migration of Amazon from Unix to Linux and owning the Linux OS development environment there. In addition to my Linux experience, I have over 25 years of operating systems experience including Unix and all the DOS/Windows varients included the embedded versions. To accomplish this task will require modifying Linux Firewire drivers to mount the required disk and/or partition and make it available as a block level device to the XP/Vista system. The format of the partition was not noted, I assume either NTFS or possibly iSCSI target. I look forward to discussing this project with you. If the solution I outline does not meet your requirements, then all you've lost is some time. JB
