Hello, I have expereince writing o na variety of topics and feel this is the right job for me. I have done reviews, features, anything and everything. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I have included a sample of my work for your reference. Junior high Band readies for D.C. trip By Dan Cooper Correspondent GRANBY- In the middle of March, the Junior High School Band will do something no instrumental group has ever done before: perform at the national Organization of American Kodaly Educators conference in Washington, D.C. “It’s [Kodaly] generally a teaching approach applied to choruses and general music,” Granby music director Greg Williams explained. “I stumbled upon the method while studying music.” The Kodaly method of teaching was developed in Hungary in the mid- twentieth century. It is named after Zoltan Kodaly, although the method was not created by him, but rather his associates to whom he passed his philosophies down to. The method involves singing through the pieces of music and breaking down the music into pieces familiar to students. Williams has been using the method since he started in Granby five years ago. “It helps the students put the music in context,” he said. “I wanted to do a live demonstration of the method to hopefully inspire other to use it.” Williams said he chose to do the demonstration because of the possible impact it could have on teaching band. Williams received word that his band had been selected to attend the March 12-14, 2009 conference on June 4, 2008. “I’ll be bringing seventh, eighth, and some ninth graders,” Williams said. Williams added that it’s only fair some ninth graders go because the made the recording last year. Williams said the trip costs $465 per person, with 104 people attending overall, including 69 students and the principals of East Meadow and the Junior/Senior High School. Williams added that he and the Granby Music Parents Association is trying to bring the cost down for everyone. “The Music parents are also paying for families who can’t afford to go on the trip,” he added. Some of the students are excited to be a part of this trip. “I’ve never been to Washington, D.C., so I’m excited,” ninth grader Abigail Imelio said. “I think it’ll be a good musical experience because we’re going out of state to play.” Eighth grader Erika Lempke agreed that the trip will be a good musical experience. Alexandra Cebula, another eighth grader, said she was ecstatic when she heard the band had gotten in. “I didn’t think we’d get in because the conference is mostly for choruses,” she said. Ninth grader Kelly Callahan said she wanted to jump up and scream when she heard the band was selected to attend. “I think we’ll have fun with the experience,” she added. Fellow ninth grader Duasha Hatch also said she was surprised the band got into the conference. Eighth grader Jared Toschev said he also was very excited to get in and surprised. “We worked a lot to get into this conference,” he said. Fellow eighth grader Alexis Mitchell said she hopes to learn to play better from the experience. “I’m happy we’re going,” she added. Fundraising for the trip is currently taking place. Upcoming events to benefit the trip to Washington include a Community Tag Sale on October 13 at the high school, with spaces available for $20. On November 1 from 5-7 PM is a “Men Who Cook” Benefit Dinner/Music Raffle/ Silent Auction. Tickets for the event are $15 and $7. On November 4 is a “Four Seasons” themed Basket Raffle at East Meadow School. Tickets are $2 or three for $5. A “Colgate 13 Concert” will happen on December 5 at 7 PM at the All Saints Church in South Hadley for $5. Finally, on December 6, from 9 AM to 3 PM at East Meadow School, there will be a “Holiday Shopping Childcare” program so parents can shop for the holidays. The cost is $15 for the first child and $5 dollars for each additional child. Williams said flat donations for the trip would also be accepted. For ticket and general information on the fundraisers, visit http://gwilliams.classdrive.net and go to the Granby Music Event Info page.
