The Blue Key Coffee House A House for You Located @ 1004 W. 13th Street Vancouver, Washington. 98660 1(360) 695-6992 By Dr. Antolic 04/01/08 In the heart of Vancouver, Washington, there is an old fashioned Firehouse,only a few blocks away from the Clark County Court House. With in the walls of this unassuming humble building, incredible things are happening. A coffee shop opened up on Good-Friday, only two days before Easter. I was lucky enough to be introduced to the amazing man who owns and runs this new neighborhood hang out. My Roommate invited him over for dinner, the day after Easter. While, he sat with us and shared our food, my roommate Eddy told us how the two of them met. Eddy has been out of work for over three weeks, and he had no money to give the man who was introduced to me as Jamal Sanders, for the coffee that Jamal had pured him. Jamal told him that “it is OK, you'll get me next time.” The Blue Key Coffee House is all so intentionally located across 13th street, from a homeless shelter called Open House Ministries. I asked the young man what inspired him to open his shop up. He told me, “people, people inspire everything I do.” Jamal's answer intrigued me to the point that I had to go and see his coffee shop for my self. So I walked in and to my surprise, both of my roommates were there already. Doug owns the house from which we live, and he has also taken the role of some kind of patriarch as well. When he saw that I too was in the house he opted to buy the three of us drinks. However, in todays culture we don't use cash. When Jamal saw Doug pulling out his debit card, he said “I am sorry, but I am not set up to take cards yet.” Doug was a bit embarrassed but true to his nature Jamal started a tab for Doug, so he could pay him back latter. The three of us stayed for about an hour, talking to Jamal and every time one of Jamal's friends came in he made it a point to introduce every one to each other. Which made this small Artistic Coffee Shop feel more and more like home. The other day I had to go to the doctor to find out if I was going to need surgery on my eyes, the test had me feeling kind of down, and I needed to rest before walking home. So once again I stopped in at the Blue Key and was even more impressed with her owner. There were some yuppie types who came in as I sat there watching the Neighborhood become closer through Jamal and his new business. What impressed me most that day was the way he handled a situation that could have been rather uncomfortable, a young woman who was with the group asked Jamal: “don't you feel strange or uncomfortable with all of these homeless people living across the street?” Making light of the situation, with no malice toward the woman, Jamal laughed and said “my friend, I am one of those people.” While I already knew that he was homeless, I felt that he was referring to the fact that in todays economy missing one paycheck could put you out on the street. Poverty is not discriminate. For many of us who live paycheck to check, seeing some one holding a sign asking for money or food or even work, only reminds us of how close each of us are to that reality. Jamal's slogan is “the House for you,” and he means it. He greets all that come through his door as if they were his family and that is how he thinks of you. He makes it a point to get to know his guest and treat them all as if they were Christ him self. So, the next time you want to go where every body knows your name, just head west on 13th street in downtown Vancouver, Washington, until you come to a red brick Firehouse. The Hours are Sundays and Week days 7am-3pm & 7am-3pm to open again at 5pm on Saturdays
