My company has setup this exact solution for several customers. Ideally you want to perform the backups using SFTP since it preserves time stamps. FTP will work but the backup client will need to support a feature called file name mangling. If you are backing up large files, like an Exchange database that can be 10GB-100GB or video files a standard FTP backup solution will NOT work. We have a product (only $60) that will perform the initial backup to your hosting company and then only transmit the changes in the files. If only 1GB changes in a 10GB file then only that portion gets backed up. I encourage you to choose us to ensure you get a solution that will work short and long term.

Hello there, I'm a chicago based programmer / system engineer. I've been writing python for the last 4 years, and have written extensive code using the ftp library and ssh libraries within python. If encryption is desired, I would recommend using paramiko at no extra expense to you. Otherwise if your set on ftp, I can provide that as well.
