We're not far off from these little rascals crowding our streets and demanding "Trick or Treat?" at our front door. But from where does this Halloween holiday come? Are its roots buried in the occult? Is it a Christian holiday? Or is it something less spectacular - simply another reason to have a celebration during the year? The best answer is "yes." That is, they're all correct. Halloween has its original roots in Celtic culture, dating back 2000 years ago during the time of Christ. The Celtics who lived in Ireland (or the area known as Ireland today) celebrated their new year on November 1. They believed that on October 31 the world of the dead and the world of living would merge. Honoring the event, the Celtics dressed in animal heads and skins and sacrificed beasts and crops in a large bonfire. The Romans, around 43 A.D., more than likely incorporated this event into their culture after conquering the Celtic lands. They already celebrated the day of the dead in late October. It wasn't until the rein of Pope Bonfiace IV that the Christians commemorated the holiday. Before the holiday was instituted, the Christians honored a specific day in which a particular saint was killed. But as the years progressed, there were more martyrs than days to honor them. So, the Pope, in the 7th Century A.D., declared November 1 as the day to remember the saints who had died. The day before became known as "All Hallows Eve" or "All Saints Eve." It is believed that the Pope desired to join the Celtic/Roman holiday with a Christian celebration in order to discourage pagan worship while encouraging belief in Christianity. Today, this holiday is an intriguing merger between the sacred and the secular. In fact, so strong is the connection that some Christians refuse to celebrate Halloween and have set up Halloween "alternatives" at their respective churches. But regardless of the history behind it, most people observe it as a time for getting candy and dressing up in sometimes bizarre costumes. So whether you choose to be your favorite superhero, a ghoul, a witch, or some other character, enjoy your time wandering the streets with your friends, going to a party, dolling out candy, or watching the activity on Halloween night. While the history is murky, we celebrate not because of what the holiday used to be, but what it means for us today. Another day to enjoy. Another time to connect with each other at home, in our churches, and in our community.
