You should have said: "However, the physician must remember HIS OR HER PRIMARY role, which is to preserve life and health." Little things make the difference. Physician is SINGULAR, and THEIR is plural. "Primarily" is obviously an adverb and is out of place. I have 35 years of experience in proofreading, as a German-to-English translator.
