Description

Quick job description

We need someone to proofread and edit 100 product descriptions per week. Each description is about 200 words long.

Job in more detail

We have an online store (mostly books and software) and we are constantly adding new products to our site. When a new product is added, a short product description is also written (it's about 200 words long). Since we outsource this work to non-native English speakers, these descriptions are not in perfect English. We do, however, only hire people with good English language skills, so you won't have to do a complete rewrite or even make a lot of changes. What you will have to do is correct a couple of punctuations, change the word order in some cases, and maybe replace an unusual word with a more common one. In rare cases, you will have to rewrite a sentence or two, in order to make the text contextually correct and make it sound more like something a native speaker would use in his speech.

The final result should be a grammatically correct text that reads like it was written by a native speaker.

What the work will look like

First, let me say that this is a weekly assignment. That basically means that you will be required to proofread and edit 100 product descriptions each week. You will receive a username and password, so you'll be able to login to our site with administrator privileges. There you will find 100 new products each week. You will open up each product, edit its description and save it.

You will get 100 new products each Monday and will have to edit and proofread them before the next Monday.

How to bid

Please bid with a weekly fee - tell us how much it would cost to proofread and edit 100 product descriptions with about 200 words each.

If you would like to see what the product descriptions look like before they are edited, just let me know and I'll send you a couple of samples.

What to include in your bid

Please tell us a little bit about yourself and, if possible, include some samples of your work. This can be pretty much anything that you're written (or even just edited). It could be your articles, web content, your blog…

If you don't have any samples of your writing, include about 200 words description of yourself in your bid. This way we'll get to know a little bit about you and also get a feel for your writing style.

I can easily provide 100 edited product descriptions each week. You can see samples of my writing at unews dot com, the university newspaper for my school, UMKC. Simply search for "peters" in the search box to access the articles I have written this year. I also built the website cmrestore dot com for my current full time employer, and wrote all content for that site as well.

Hi, this is right up my alley. I'm a former editor-in-chief of a small town newspaper (Santa Rosa News, Santa Rosa, New Mexico). I can't even read without the urge to edit the spelling, grammar, or even just the punctuation. I would love to have a steady stream of extra work (this is perfect) even if it is just $100 per week. I will always work diligently until the work is finished, in this case an average of 20 per day is nice and easy. Even if I don't know a word, it's been my practice to look it up and find it's spelling and proper meaning. Some say I'm a perfectionist, but I believe there is only one way to get a job done; 'the right way!'. I once got thrown out of a newspaper office when I went in looking for a job. I had highlighted a newspaper's errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation and brought it with me with the intention of letting the editor know he needed someone else to do this job. Big mistake, it was his work and the paper was almost entirely yellow from the hightlighter. Oh, well, live and learn.

I am new to GAF and I am willing to work long hours in order to complete a project in reasonable time. I am a single 30 year old mother with three children. I have a college degree in business management and I am able to type 50 words per minute. I have been writing since I was a child. I have wrote poems, stories, and many other items. I do not work outside of home because I am unable to pay day care costs for my children. I live in a small town in Missouri where jobs are hard to find. I am a perfectionist in most areas of my work. Most people describe me as a person who understands most things, caring, loving, independent, stubborn, and unwilling to leave anything undone. I have worked as a health and beauty aids manager in a grocery store for two years and I am able to work alone and long hours in order to complete any project I begin. I am the type of person who is willing to do whatever it takes to get a job and continue to give 100% to my job. I am very dependable and willing to help everyone I am able to.

Hello, I am a research and teaching assistant with PhD and working for a university. I have published many articles in international journals (I can provide if you demand). I assure to provide the descriptions edited correctly right on time on weekly basis. I have self discipline and take my works seriously. I work quick, accurate and honest. I am not a native speaker and I think this is an advantage in this case because I am used to edit writings of non-native speakers and understand their error types very well... I would be happy if you consider my bid. Thank you. Regards, Aslihan

Hello there I am very interested in your job posting and hope you will consider me for this project. I have many years office experience, fast and accurate keyboard skills, and always pay great attention to detail. I am new to freelancing and am keen to find more ongoing work - I am presently proofreading/editing for another employer through this site. I am unable to provide you with a sample as it is confidential to that company but it does sound similar to your description in that the original content is written by non native English speakers so I am editing/changing the word order etc. so that the content flows and sounds natural. I am Scottish, living in Spain, and available online from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday GMT +1. I am contactable via email or Skype. My last job was administrator for a large internet property portal so I am familiar with logging on to a website and using an administration panel. Of course I realise that each company has their own systems and I would therefore be happy to follow your specific instructions to make sure the task was carried out to your satisfaction. I hope my bid is of interest to you. Please let me know if I can provide you with any further information. I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards Diane Brown

Hi, I'm a native English speaking journalist, freelance ghostwriter, translator and editor, based in Spain. Check out my blog for samples of my writing style, which is normally irreverent, quirky or literary. But I can do run-of-the-mill beautifully as well.(www.singularcake.blogspot.com) I have worked as a weekly newspaper sub editor for two years, which involved daily proofing of pages at high speed. I also recently proofed several web sites (including product descriptions) for which the customer was extremely pleased - with my speed, accuracy and attention to detail overall.(I can provide references.) I love Asturian cider with sausage casserole, watching snowboarders and picking apart sci-fi plots. I can be in contact daily via MSN, Google talk or Skype and I promise all communications with me will be swift and to the point. Regards, Penny Lapenna

I think .50 cents per description would be a fair price for this. If you were thinking of a completely different price I would still be willing to work with you because I am very interested in this project. I can definitely get these done in the week deadline and Im sure much earlier. I can email you samples of things I have edited. I have been editing for the past 8 years. I am an experienced administrative assistant, copyeditor, proofreader, typesetter, and designer, in addition to having many years of experience in an office setting (data entry, accounts payable/receivable, spreadsheets, billing, etc.). My ex-husband and I have been running our own graphic design and publishing business, Vinci-Designs & Publishing since 2005. For the past 4 years, I have been freelance copyediting and proofreading for Idea Group Publishing, Pinnacle Health Care, University Press, and many others. I have also assisted several companies doing administrative tasks, proofreading, data entry, billing, etc. I am currently working part-time for an NFL sports writer as a personal assistant researching information and photos for articles, setting up interviews, transcribing interviews, and uploading articles to online sites and blogs. Due to the current economic downturn, my workflow with our business has slowed down considerably. I am looking to almost dissolve our business and find work elsewhere. Prior to starting our business, I held a full-time position as a copyeditor/editorial assistant for Idea Group Publishing in Hershey, Pennsylvania, where I was employed for more than two years until my relocation to Florida in 2005. I am a very hard worker, dedicated to any job I set out to do. I have a great eye for detail and believe strongly in being an honest and fair person. Dependability is a very hard trait to come by for both part-time workers and freelancers and I strive to exceed your expectations for any project I set out to accomplish. I look forward to hearing from you, if not now, in the future. Thank you so much for your time. Larissa Vinci

As an ex-secondary school teacher and as someone who currently works in publishing, I'm a real stickler for spelling, punctuation and grammar and have successfully completed training courses on their appropriate use. I'm a British graduate of the University of Warwick in the UK and now work for a biomedical journal publishing company in London. My role involves proofreading, editing, transcribing and improving academically-written content from all over the world, so I'm no stranger to having to make sense of a non-native speaker's English. I am able to use British or American English as per your requirements. Within the company I work for, I have particular responsibility for the content of www.biologyimagelibrary.com. A significant part of the job involves doing exactly what you are describing for your project, that is, editing the text for descriptions of items in an online catalogue - except my "products" are images. I would love the opportunity to work with you on this project and believe that we could forge a mutually beneficial working relationship. Although I work full time, I dedicate my evenings and weekends to freelance work. I should add that while I am new to GetAFreelancer (and so have low feedback), I have completed other freelance work via other channels and have a significant amount of editorial experience. I am also fully computer literate and immediately available. My bid is for 100 descriptions per week, as specified in the project listing. I do look forward to hearing from you.

Hello: I'm a Toronto-based editor, who has over a decade of experience working both in-house and as a freelancer. As an editor, much of my work falls to book-length projects, working directly with authors to shape content before manuscripts are handed over to production. I have solid, copy editing and proofreading skills, and am comfortable editing for both US-English and British/Commonwealth-English. (The latter comes in handy when editing work written by non-native English speakers as I am able to spot odd language and word usage based on direct translations.) I also know the difference between a light edit and a more moderate to thorough edit. In terms of word w(i)elding experience, I am a former academic (art history & film studies) and also a creative writer (short stories and screenplays). I am very comfortable handling electronic edits -- whether working in MS Word, using its "track changes" feature or working online using web editing platforms such as Dreamweaver. I don't foresee any difficulty completing this weekly editing assignment of 100 (200 word) articles according to your proposed schedule. I also welcome this work as an on-going assignment. My bid for this project is $150.00, based on my estimated time of 10 hours of work for the proposed weekly assignment, at a rate of $15.00 per hour. Check PM for editing and writing samples. I'm prepared to start work on this assignment immediately. I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards, Lise Creurer

Hello Brian-- My name is Ryan Finley and I work as a web editor for Fortune 500 company. I would love the chance to showcase my skills as an editor and proofreader. I have a degree in English Lit from Northwestern University and have been working as a writer in some form for almost 6 years. In my spare time I do some blogging and fiction writing. Here is a short excerpt from some recent work of mine: --"The reason that Trick ‘r Treat succeeds is the way in which it evokes a nostalgic feel for the holiday. Everything is just right – from the leaves blowing across sidewalks, to the impossibly fun-looking party, to the glowing Jack-O-Lanterns everywhere. Watching Trick ‘r Treat, I was transported to a more innocent time. A time when I thought more of candy and ghosts and less of the cost of costumes. Though no one element strikes me as “great,” the package as a whole is well worth the price of admission. If you’re looking to get in the Halloween mood, you can’t do much better than this film. So grab yourself a bowl of treats, turn down the lights, and let Trick ‘r Treat usher in another Halloween." -- Let me know if you would like to see more, I have plenty to offer. Thank you for your time.

I have been a proof reader for almost 6 years now with a lot of clients locally. I have been looking for a work which is more business oriented. And I am very much interested in your product range. I think 40 cents per article is a fair rate. Here is a sample of my work, it is an excerpt from on of my previous works," Pentathlon was one of the most expected events of the five-day meet. This was meant to combine the different fields of engineering into a single event so that students from different streams could build a team and compete. It would be a better way of understanding the different nuances in engineering. It would expose the participants to unorthodox methods of thinking hence helping them in their learning curve." This is just a small part of my work.

Sir, your project attracted me because of the books you have mentioned in your project description, and the way things are put up in a meticulous fashion. Pen picture of myself is as follows: Iam a teacher by profession worked for several years now ventured into free lance writing and enjoyong every bit of time. I have number of hobbies where reading is my priority and sometimes becomes an obsession. I like to read on different subjects , different books parallely. My second hobby is unending enthusiasm to learn new things , does'nt matter even if if Iam not exposed to previously, so now Iam on my journey to learn Hindu holy scriptures, I love all growing things be it plants, animals, and children, and interested to visit all new or historical places. I hope I have not bored with my details. I see that you have great number of bidders and have tough task to select, I wish you best of luck with your selection. Regards, KVL

Hello, I'm a professional freelance writer/editor from Austin, TX, currently in Lubbock, TX. My mother was a freelance editor herself, and I inherited her propensity for spotless grammar, punctuation, and articulation. This assignment sounds great - refreshing, really, when compared to the typical monthly bulk assignments. I'm very interested in the position, and assure you of my punctuality and attention to detail. I will not disappoint. Thank you for your consideration, and I hope to work with you soon. Sincerely, Aden Kelly

Dear Prospective Client, English is not my first language, but, going by the comments of my friends in the United States, I'll pay you in dollars if you can tell the difference between my writing style and that of a true Yankee. This may work against me, but I need you to know that I am new to this kind of internet work, unlike to writing in general; so, please, could you just ignore any move that sounds green -- in terms of my bidding, that is. Thanks. Fact is, I can do what you want, especially as you have taken the time to give a gist of it. Say, why not just send me something and let my work convince you whether or not i can do this stuff. Expecting to hear from you. Joseph Dauda Yakwo. NB: I am a Nigerian living in Nigeria, but, please, don't put me off because of that. You need a serious-minded worker, don't you?

I have just graduated in communication studies and editing and proof-reading have been my core subjects of interest. I have been writing articles in local English newspaper in Pakistan. I have worked for the newsletter of a trust school. There I used to proof-read and edit the newsletter. I am bidding for this project because I believe I have an experience of working as a proof-reader. More over I have a strong grip over English language though I am not a native English speaker but my grammar and writing skills are very well-built.

Hi there! I'm a native English speaking proofreader/editor. My background is in IT and I have worked in the industry for over 12 years. During this time I have both written and proofread/edited many types of documents for various audiences. In my job, time management and adhering to deadlines is very important. My passion, however, is reading. I just love to read! My husband calls me a bookworm and says I read like I'm in a marathon! I do read and work fast, but errors in text always stand out to me - whether they are spelling, punctuation, grammar, typos etc. I'd get my red pen out and make the necessary corrections, but I can't bear to put marks all over my beloved books. I have a lot of experience proofreading the written work of people for whom English is their second language. My bid is for 100 product descriptions (about 200 words per description) per week. Looking forward to working with you. Have a great day! ProofReadMe

Bryan, I am very interested in this project and would love to start as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I can't provide any examples from previous work, having just started my career as a freelance proofreader. Here is some information about myself: being born as a native German speaker, I came in contact with the English language at a very early age. My mother, a freelancer herself, translated the books of an American missionary from English to German. Soon I discovered my own passion for languages and started assisting my mother. My tasks included editing and proofreading the daily drafts. After high school, I started my college education as an animal caregiver, where my English skills proved extremely helpful during the daily interaction with foreign customers. After college, I decided to take a further step towards perfecting my language skills and emigrated to the UK, where I passed the Academic version of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test at Leeds University with an overall score of 8.0 (achieving a maximum score of 9.0 in reading). Although I am not a certified professional, I would love to get some first experiences, and for this I am willing to accept a competitively low rate. I would be thrilled to work for your company and prove my accuracy and excellent reading skills in your service. I am looking forward to a response from you. Regards Melinda Hertig

Hi Brian, My bid is based on completing 100 articles per week at $1 per article. First and foremost, I have recently just set up my own media business working from home based in Wolverhampton, UK. I have been in the media industry for over 10 years with experience across all discplines including journalism, marketing, advertising, communications and PR. I also hold a BA Honours degree in media and communication and sociology. I am married and expecting my first child in March of 2010 and have an added motivation to succeed in this business. My heart above all is to establish an ongoing working relationship as I believe repeat business is based on reaching the needs of the customer not the contents of their pocket, so friendship and good business relations is something I will be looking to establish out of ongoing work with you. As a gesture of good will I am open to negotiate a contract should you guarantee work exclusively to me. If you wish to learn more about my business and wish to view my credentials and a porfolio of previous work I have done, please visit www.waldronenterprises.co.uk There is also a contact facility on the site to get in touch with me directly. Should I not be accepted for this project, I would like to keep in touch and hope you find the right person for this job. Have a great day. Daniel Waldron
