I have 3 years experience in programing companies. The selection job can be done fast with AJAX. For the database population I will create a function that will parse the data. http://www.stcl.ro/catalog/product_list.php?id_category=1&no_products=6070&page=1 The data on this entire site is parsed by a function developed by me. Regarding the comment of the function it wont be any problem, neighter with Firefox and IE I usually write code that it's correctly viewable on both browser. Moreover it's gonna be a solution that will validate XHTML1.1 and CSS2

As a student I can take this work as a practice project with php/mysql. 1)Php/mysql connections can be done 2)JavaScript can be used for form validations and menus for sub-sub menus. Lots of examples in dynamic drive. 3)html tables can be used for mysql table display. Or if you want AJAX table sorting can be implimented 4)Sending mail in php can be done with mail/ezmlm_hash functions. 5)sessions,cookies ect to remember "who's log-in" and php paging, Bread crumes.. If you are able to get the design work done then I will do the javascript/ajax and php coding. I have been collecting a huge Number of php/ajax ebooks. I want to apply all. And I also want to have long term contacts with web masters. Even If you have allotted this project to some one, then never mind to do it free of nothing in return!!. I hope I am clear.
