The webserver really is an embedded module from Digi.com with 4MBflash,8MB RAM. Its a serial to ethernet converter, its just called webserver, because it connects the PLC to the web.as for all other PLC manufacturers with this capability
The or a java applet can stay in it or not, depends whats more elegant.
The AJAX or whatever script for the cron job is stored on a main server (a real server from a hosting company)
this script fetches the data from the PLC using the IDEC webserver to communicate from ethernet to the serial port of the PLC. This script now can use an applet stored on the IDEC webserver if convenient or just use the IDEC serial protocol that i uploaded.
This script loads the data from the IDEC webserver and stores them on a SQL database on the main server. no big deal i think, just a script implementing the communication protocol.
the main server also stores a website that can be loaded from anywhere in the world and from any browser to look at the data in the SQL database.
