Description

Hi All,

I have a problem with installing Ubuntu on a dedicated server that uses a hardware RAID setup and I am looking for some help.

We have a server that uses a PCI SATA Host Card to connect two 250GB hard drives together in a RAID 1 configuration. We need to install Ubuntu on it but during install it still sees 2 hard drives even after they have been setup as a RAID 1 mirror in the BIOS.

The PCI SATA crad is the following: http://www.heisei.com.tw/products/media/pci-pci-express-card-adapter/sata/hs-202x-serial-ata-pci-host-card/

I am looking for an experienced Linux freelancer who can help us with this problem. Payment will be on completion of the project.
Kind regards,

Matthew

Hi. It's just like meral said below - you need a software raid. Your installer will not see the drives as a single device; instead, you should instruct the installer to use "software raid".

Short: This card is software raid card and can be used only in this way. You must set up software raid in disk partitioning install stage. Technical: while it is possible to use bios settings of software raid Linux don't use them by default and it is not best way to do things. If you configure software raid using BIOS it simply writes RAID "superblocks" (raid signatures) at the end of drives (raid superblocks are away written here). BIOS also contains small utility to "build" arrays - e.g. sync mirrors. This is done in "software way". Recommended setup is: 1) Split drive in 4 partitions: 512MB for /boot, 2GB (typically this equals your RAM size), ~4GB for system (/), remaining space for server data storage. 2) set 1 ,3 ,4 partitions no both dives to type xFD ("LINUX raid autodetect") set 2 partitions no both dives to type x82 ("Linux swap) 3) create raid array (md0) ; 1(512MB) partitions and use it as /boot create raid array (md1) ; 3(4GB) partitions and use it as / create raid array (md2) ; 4(4GB) partitions and use it for data - e.g. /var/lib or where you plan to pace data. * While Linux supports boot form software raid arrays in case it fails you can use one of /boot partitions in boot loader setup. This is why it is recommended to place /boot in separate partition. * swap partitions are not placed in software raid as 1. there is no need to mirror swap. 2. if you have multiple swap partition Linux kernel automatically use them in as striped raid storage to speed up things. While it is possible to swap on software raid partition it is slow method. * separate partitions for OS and data is just recommendation, you may use 1 partition (array) too.
