Description

Project Overview:
Goal of this project is to create the Navigation Application for Mobile Phones and Smartphones. This application will combine typical, turn-by-turn navigation functionality with the functionality of displaying additional geographical and text information (like POI’s contours or POI’s text descriptions).

Turn-by-turn navigation functionality should be implemented based on data from OpenStreetMap, while additional information (contours, text) should be based on data from Service Provider’s server. OSM data and data from Service Provider’s server should be combined together to create Input Files so that the User will be able to download those Input Files to his device, open in the application and navigate.

This application is intended mainly to work off-line (!) using local data kept locally, however with the possibility to activate on-line connection and get some additional information directly from Google Map (like Satellite view for example).

The application itself will be only some sort of browser with no data so there must be also implemented the mechanism of transforming geographical data coming from two sources (OSM and Service Provider databases) into Input Files for application.

Application should be as much as possible device independent and work with most of popular mobile phones and Smartphones working under Symbian, Mobile Windows, iPhone etc. as long as those phones meet minimum requirements (screen resolution etc.). Application should be also compatible with touch-screen devices so that all functionality will be available by touching appropriate elements. Application should work with different screen resolutions (depending on the device) and adjust automatically to fit to the whole screen.

This application should use Open Street Map data for the purposes of displaying the map and calculating a route. It is expected that rather than writing this application from the scratch, some existing components or application will be reused (like software for handling OSM data GPSMID http://gpsmid.sourceforge.net) to not reinvent the wheel. However any reused software should be appropriately modified to guarantee necessary integration, functionality and professional look & feel (Look & Feel must be top professional like modern applications for iPhone or Tomtom or Garmin).

This project is the first phase. Phase II shall be considered as separate project. The SP is welcome to provide a bid for that work after the completion of Phase I and most likely will be preferred vendor for Phase II.
