Silverlight has several advantages over the existing competitor ‘flash’.Silverlight doesn’t require codec to run videos while flash needs them.While the former supports scalable video formats from hard disk to mobile, the latter doesn’t support the same.Silverlight supports hardware assisted editing and encoding.It also provides end-to-end server and application platform.But both the above are not provided by flash.While the media server licensing is cheaper using silverlight, it is costlier while using flash.Silverlight supports scalable full screen video but flash does not do so. Besides the numerous advantages of silverlight, it suffers several drawbacks when compared with flash.Silverlight has no support for the popular operating system linux.Sound processing cannot be done using silverlight , which is possible using flash.While the latter supports GIF file format, the former does not.Socket programmimg is not possible using silverlight but it is possible using flash, by the using of XML.Webcam and microphone support is not available with silverlight.But flash supports the same.Flash supports in-built upload and download but silverlight does not.The last straw to break the camel’s back is the size of the components in silverlight.It is about 10-20 times larger than the components in flash.Hence larger disk space needs to be allocated while using silverlight. After analysis of characteristics of silverlight, the conclusion that arrives is the fact that silverlight has to undergo a lot of modifications so as to compete and challenge the existing competitor flash by eliminating its fallacies
