After attending U of M Medical School, and as an Army Medical & Surgical Technician—I have become a Health and Medical Writer/Consultant, primarily to physicians in marketing their services to patients. I am very qualified to create your articles on health and medical. (SEE BELOW) medmanUSA ANTI-OXIDANTS By Bruce Heath, DnC. Ever since Dr. Linus Pauling suggested to the world that vitamin C prevents colds because of its antioxidant properties has the race started to find better food sources with higher concentrations of antioxidants. This health-seeking frenzy has now leaked into the beverage industry with hundreds of fortified beverages fighting for their share of this lucrative market. Cheers! You don’t have to drink so much red wine anymore! Somewhere after Pauling’s vitamin C claims and before the amazing Snapple generation took off, a weird notion about drinking came to be accepted. That drinking red wine was good for you. Not because of the buzz you got, but for its antioxidant properties. However, before the French had a chance to celebrate this bonanza for their vineyards, it was soon discovered you didn’t have to drink the stuff to get the benefits. Further research by very sober food authorities, revealed a substance called “resveratrol.” that is extracted from the source of wine itself—the grape. We may have found the poor man’s HGH! Found in the skins of red grapes, resveratrol is not only one of the most powerful antioxidants known, it’s also an anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal— with anti-aging properties! With this huge attribute, claims have been suggested that we may have found the Fountain of Youth and maybe even the poor man’s substitute for HGH (Human Growth Hormone). So far, the picture of Dorian Gray remains unchanged, but there are hopes for increased, measureable longevity. Despite all the hype about people getting their antioxidants from fruits and veggies, most of them come from beverages, and one in particular—coffee! Coffee not only clears the mind and perks it up, that 1.64 cups the average American drinks per day provides more antioxidants than any other food or beverage! Except for well, maybe tea? Tea gaining grounds over coffee. Tea, namely Green Tea, a refreshing, healthy, alternative to soft drinks and sweetened beverages, is rapidly gaining ground over coffee as the healthier waker-upper. Green Tea, with 10 times the amount of antioxidants compared to equivalent portions of fruits or vegetables, is known to fight viruses and slow down the body’s aging process. EGCG, its main antioxidant is 100 times more powerful than vitamin C, and TWICE that of resveratrol, has benefits beyond belief: • reduces high blood pressure • lowers blood sugar • prevents cancers • boosts immune system Grandma was a berry smart woman. When grandma insisted berries were good for you, she was right. Berry science has boomed in the last 10 years and found that cherries were more effective than aspirin in relieving pain and inflammation! This finding generated a tidal wave of cherry products promoting it as an anti-inflammatory agent. And above all— natural! Natural fruit juices have been around for ages. You know the common ones-- orange, apple, tomato. They’re all-time favorites, but too tame for today’s kids, and even for baby boomers. They require juices that go to the extreme. And they even have to sound extreme, like “Naked Juice.” Keep your shirt on, only the juice is naked. Now before you start imagining “Naked Juice” as some kind of exotic aphrodisiac— it’s not, but with all the energy it packs it might as well be. It contains guarana and green tea extracts. In other words— pure caffeine! About 2 coffee cups worth, and with the extra B vitamins added, you can really take off. Why have health beverages become so popular? Even though they are expensive, many people prefer consuming nutrients in drink form rather than pills or powders. Also, rising obesity rates have moved consumers away from soft drinks and juices. Remember, even with these health drinks, you still have to count the calories. No amounts of supplements, in any form are a substitute for the real thing or will replace the goodness found in nutritious foods. According to the USDA’s Food Guide Pyramid, to get a substantial dose of antioxidants and other vitamins and nutritionals, the average person should consume 3 vegetables and 2 fruit servings a day. Now there’s food for thought!
