Sometimes though, no matter how "on the ball" you are with hair care, things can still happen to the condition of your hair, which can destroy the image you are trying to portray. Over 1.6 million women suffer with alopecia, a condition that causes much unhappiness and discontent with a women´s self-confidence, which as we all know is never very high to start with! Six out of ten women lose their hair at some point during their life, not a very nice fact, but true all the same. The good news is, that alopecia can be prevented and treated both with solutions and shampoos, and some vitamins. Hair loss can be caused by many things, Patrik says that one of the major culprits is stress, but hormonal drugs like HRT, or hormonal imbalances during pregnancy can also be to blame. These hormonal imbalances usually rectify themselves, but factors like chemotherapy or even the "hair loss" gene can´t. The "hair loss" gene isn´t just your dad´s fault however, it´s something that you inherit from both parents. The myths about it being your maternal grandmother, or paternal grandfather aren´t true. Hair loss is also never caused by a lack of vitamins, weight disorders i.e. Anorexia or Bulimia can result in hair loss, but a more likely cause is anaemia, a genetic influence, a fungal infection or stress. Supplements like Zinc and B vitamins are particularly effective at preventing and treating hair loss, sadly there is no cure but there are some products, which can aid your hair´s regrowth. A full head of hair consists of around 100,000 – 400,000 strands of hair, we lose on average between 50-100 hairs a day, this is considered a normal amount. Although you should always consult your GP if you do believe that you are losing much more than this amount, Patrik can recommend some products from his own lines that can stimulate hair growth. All of these products are topical solutions, that when applied with a massage can increase blood circulation, thus aiding in hair growth. One of his best products is called Milkshake, the products come in a kit of shampoo, lotion and a cluster of ampoules. You can either be treated in the salon with the products, or you can buy them to use at home. Another brand called Simply Zen, an established Italian brand, also comes in kit form- shampoo, and a scalp lotion and costs 60 euros. Patrik says these treatments are highly effective and nourish the hair whilst preventing and treating alopecia. He also recommends the use of natural hair brushes, whilst styling your hair, as they are much softer on the hair and scalp. Man-made fibres and plastics pull at the hair, causing more hair loss! You should also dry your hair naturally, and if you do want to colour your tresses, then you should use a semi-permanent colour, one without ammonia, as this will cause no damage and won´t aggravate the condition.
