I AM NOT A DOCTOR OR MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL OF ANY SORT. DO NOT INTERPRET ANYTHING SAID HERE AS SCIENTIFIC FACT OR TRUTH. What?! Are you crazy? Everyone KNOWS how bad smoking is for you! It causes cancer, heart disease, and who knows what other medical problems. After all, it turns everything that nasty yellow brown color, which of course means your lungs have tar in them. It makes your house, clothes, hair, and car all smell funny. I snore like a freight train when I smoke. Smoking is a dirty filthy nasty habit. It is an addiction. Once you start, quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to try to do. Not only that, it is extremely expensive. Where I live, a pack of smokes is over $5.00. If you are an average smoker, and smoke a pack a day, that comes out to $150.00 a month. I can certainly think of much better things to do with $150.00 than watch it go up in smoke, literally. There is the argument that you are poisoning your loved ones. Second hand smoke is at least as bad if not worse for you than smoking. We have all heard the preaching, and know that they say how bad smoking is for you. I give you that. Now, it’s my turn. When I was a former non-smoker, my life was filled with all the normal job and family related stress imaginable that we all experience. I was a frightened, nervous, stressed out individual. Emotionally I would have fit into any of those categories that are called passive-aggressive, or co-dependent, as well as obsessive-compulsive. Stress took its toll on my body. I experienced heart palpitations, blinding migraines, stomach issues including a suspected ulcer, weight gain, and hair loss, just to name a few. Well, gee, those sound almost as bad for you as the effects of smoking. Either way, my body will not last forever. This we all know. On the flip side of things, I am not nearly as stressed. When I deal with an angry customer, I have an excuse to walk away and calm down for five minutes. I don’t have to just internalize everything and try to keep going. When I have a personal issue that may need addressed, I can sit down with a smoke and think things though like a rational person before I just simply over react to what is happening or how I am feeling. I am not frightened of my own shadow anymore. I can think clearly about what I really feel and know and express my wants and needs like an adult. When I have work to do, I don’t have to keep working, working, working. I can take a break for five minutes, sit down and have a smoke, and not be stressed about everything being done immediately. I even have the ability not to take life so seriously, and laugh at myself. Could I have accomplished this more rational way of dealing with life without smoking? I really don’t know because I smoke. That is what I know. What I also know is that when I try to quit the nervous tension returns like an old creepy friend I would rather avoid, and I make Medusa look like a choir lady. I don’t like the person I am. I would much rather be the fun, casual, laid back, calm person I am who knows when I need to take a break and relax. So, my conclusion is that I am going to die sooner or later of something. Do I want people to remember me as a complete lunatic with a mean attitude or as a person who has self control and can be a lot of fun? What do you think?
