Inner Mongolia
The mystery and intrigue of both the Chinese and Mongolian cultures can be found well blended in China’s administrative region that is known as Inner Mongolia. This administrative region borders on both Russia and Mongolia, and makes up China’s northern frontier. Its capital is the city of Hohhot.
It is home to around 24 million people, a small portion of the vast Chinese population. The majority of those people live in rural settings instead of its urban areas. More of them tend to reside in the Eastern portion of the region, as opposed to the Western portion. The majority of them are Han Chinese in nationality, with the largest minority portion being of Mongolian descent. Both Standard Mandarin Chinese and Mongolian are the official languages found in this location. When traveling there, one can see the street signs written in both languages.
High grasslands make up most of the topographical area, but forests and desserts can also be found. Most people still think of the grasslands when they think of this area. Numerous people will travel the short distance from their urban life into the grasslands to experience the calming and simple way of life that the nomadic Mongolian people live today. This lifestyle is basically the same as that which was lived centuries ago.
The herding of goats and sheep is the most common occupation found in the region. A quality wheat crop is also grown along the river valleys that are located there.
The arid grasslands do have some tremendous resources. There are numerous coal mines that are found in this region. Cashmere from the goat herders is also a tremendous resource. Natural gas as well as rare earth elements are also commonly found in Inner Mongolia.
This area traditionally has extremely long and cold winters that are filled with blizzards and harsh temperatures. The average temperature in the winter is merely 16 degrees Fahrenheit. There is a short warm summer, but even then, there is a vast difference in temperatures from the night air and during the daytime. It is wise for visitors to the area to bring warm clothing even during the warm part of the year, because of the cold summer nights.
There are several common places to visit in this region. The famous Gobi dessert is located in Inner Mongolia. The renowned explorer Marco Polo, along with his father and uncle, were the first Europeans known to travel this arid expanse. The Mausoleum of the famous Mongolian warrior Genghis Khan is also found in this region. It is located in Ordos City. The Wudandzhao Monastery is also in Inner Mongolia. This is the best preserved Tibetan style Buddhist monastery that can be found in all of China. The Bashang Grasslands offer the most convenient grassland area to visit, since its location is so close to China’s capital city of Beijing. The Dazhao Temple was built in 1580 and is famous for its silver Buddha statue, elaborate dragon carvings that are found throughout the edifice, and its beautiful murals.
