Asthma and childhood
Between 1 and 2 percent of children worldwide are diagnosed of Chronic Asthma at the early stage of their childhood.Its been found to be the most frequent long-term enemy of children and more than 60 percent of childhood victims do not survive Asthma before their 10th birthday.
Diagnosing Asthma in toddlers is quite difficult since they cannot communicate how bad they are feeling about the problem.Young children are however still active despite the fact that they are living with Asthma.What Paedatrician ask from most parents are informations about family histories of Asthma and allergies,the child’s overall behaviour in response to Asthma attacks and breathing difficulties.Long tests usually conducted on Asthmatic adults is quite difficult to perform on little children instead medications are given to them and their responces to these medications are monitored and later the child will be required to undergo blood tests,allergy tests and X-ray tests.Gathering all information from these tests,then the doctor can make the correct diagnosis on a child.
Asthmatic toddlers can take the type of medications older children take just that the doses of such medications are reduced for toddlers.Medications given to toddlers are usually in liquid forms or a nebulizer{breathing machine} which is a small machine used to force air to create some medication mist for the baby to breath through a small face mask connected to the small machine. Some toddlers are initially freightened at the sight of the mask but they get used to it as times goes on.
Some toddlers are however able to get used to an inhaler containing asthma medication with a spacer and mask attachment. A spacer is a small tube,often refered to as aerochamber which holds the medication released by the inhaler fitted .This inhaler or spencer device allow children to breath in the medication at their own speed
Other medications for Asthmatic children include Bronchodilators which are quick relieving medications which open up the child’s airways when under Asthmatic attack to make breathing easier.This type of medication are considered to be short-term.Long term medications include Corticosteroids or Cromolyn sodium which keeps Asthma sysmptoms to the bearest minimum,Most children are given a combination of medications according to the severity of their Asthmatic symptoms.
The best form of managing Asthma symptoms at childhood is to reduce to the minimum allergy triggers within children’s environment.Asthmatic Children’s bedrooms should be as clean as possible because they spend up to 18 hours there everyday.Allergies-proof casings should be used to cover pillows,mattresses and box springs,vacuum cleaning should be done almost on daily basis,even dirty pets should not be allowed into children’s bedrooms.
Approximately 50 percent of children have been found to have outgrown Asthma when they get to adolescent age this is as a result of of the fact that as a child's airways mature at adolescence, they are able to handle airway inflammation and irritants better, so their asthma symptoms may notably decrease and it has also been discovered that breast-feeding infants significantly reduce the chances of young children developing allergies of Asthma.
