CRUNCH TIME It’s said that even the most experienced economist/financial analyst could not have seen it coming. Market experts and economists are struggling to explain the fact that the current economic slow-down in Kenya is as a result of a combination of the Post-Election violence in January 2008 and global economic melt down, which appears to complicate matters. Already, Kenya’s economic growth rate had entered the slow lane, courtesy of the post-election violence in January 2008 resulting in a negative growth rate during the first quarter of that year. “The world economy appears to be taking a sharp down turn, driving several countries into a recession…” said a leading Kenyan economic expert recently. Drought and poor planning in agriculture also played a big role in fueling the effects of the global melt-down. There were comments by a section of Kenyan leaders indicating that the Kenyan economy is insulated from the effects of the world economic crisis! Observations however, indicate the opposite. If there were any doubts, the collapse of GTV recently served as a reminder that Kenya is not immune. The pay TV company closed shop after it failed to secure credit from its UK financiers, as the lenders tightened their purses for fear of the worsening economic conditions. At the Nairobi Stock Exchange, the story has not been different. Greed and unwarranted risk taking has eroded investor confidence. The collapse of three stock brokerage firms; Francis Thuo & Partners, Nyaga Stock Brokers and Discount Securities, have made worse an already bad situation. Eroding of local and foreign investor confidence has caused counters to tumble. Wealth at the Nairobi Stock Exchange has been wiped out to the tune of hundreds of billions of shillings. Tourism is also expected to take a dip -failing to reach levels experienced before the global economic crisis- mainly due to the fall in the spending power of consumers from markets such as Europe and America that traditionally bring tourists to Kenya. Fewer visitors are also expected from these regions today. Tourism experts concur that Kenya needs to aggressively market its traditional tourist circuits, seek out new markets and invest in areas that would make travel cheaper. More recently, tourism players announced plans to bring in about 150 tour operators and journalists from across the African continent, in a bid to market Kenya. They have decided to take this move and focus on Africa as a possible source market even as the global financial crisis takes it toll on the industry. However, it is not all gloom. Among Kenya’s leading exports, horticultural products like flowers, fruits and vegetables still maintain their demand and this has complicated economic analysis of the situation. They say that in horticulture, demand is expected to go against trends set by the economic slow-down world wide. Changes in peoples lifestyles from eating out to cooking at home, will see an increase in the consumption of fruits and vegetables, while flowers which brighten peoples homes and lives- especially during tough economics times like we have today- will still be in demand.
