When I was little, my favorite drink was Root beer, mainly because my mom forced us kids to drink skim milk 99.999 percent of the time, so a little pop every once in awhile was a treat. I would savor every sip and get disappointed when I poured the remaining mixture of sweet syrup mixed with the right amount of carbonation down my throat. Back then, my parents owned a golfing range, and I spent many hot summer days sitting around, thinking of ways to keep busy or stay out of trouble. It seems one particular day, my mom gave me permission to get a Root beer; probably due to the heat or more likely it was because of my incessant complaining of boredom. I remember I left my can of Root beer outside for a few minutes. It was the middle of the summer, and I knew I didn't have much time to leave my nice, cold A&W Root beer alone before the thick, humid air sucked the chill right out of it. I came back to it as soon as I could, sat down and clenched the can in my little hands, feeling the sweat between my fingers. I gulped the remaining lukewarm drink and something very strange swam inside my mouth. It was not Root beer; oh no. It was probably the size of a quarter and it made my tongue swell the instant it landed on it. This foreign body had moving parts; small and several moving parts to be exact that made a hissing sound. It banged into the insides of my cheeks like a caged animal and although this happened in two seconds at the most, I, as a little girl, can still feel the prisoner's whacks. I spit this beast out of my mouth, gasping for air and clenching my chest. I looked down at my puddle of spit with my jaw to the floor. A giant wasp lay splattered on the pavement, still alive; wet with my sticky brown liquid. Its wings wrinkled and heavy. Its antennas struggling to move. Its thorax glued to the ground. Its black stringy legs stuck battling to break free. Needless to say, I could never and will never drink a Root beer again.
