And, if they consume a potassium rich diet, and also restrict their salt intake, the results are spectacular. Reducing premature death from heart diseases and strokes involves reducing, and when possible eliminating, the following major risk factors: 1. smoking 2. elevated blood cholesterol levels 3. high blood pressure 4. diabetes 5. obesity 6. sedentary lifestyle or physical inactivity Health tip: Consume 1 whole walnut daily. Walnut protects your heart. A study found that a walnut enhanced diet help attain lower levels of cholesterol, LDL (a lipoprotein), and Lp (a) (a form of lipoprotein that poses to be a much greater risk factor for atherosclerosis and cardio-vascular diseases than LDL). Also, the walnut is an amazing source of the omega 3 fatty acid, which guards the heart from damage. Foods that have very high sodium content: Fish (haddock, flounder, salmon, cod), chicken, pork, lamb, roast beef, spinach, melon Restrict your intake of these. Food prescriptions to keep heart disorders at bay: o Increase your intake of omega 3 fatty acids by eating linseed oil, walnuts and small amounts of cold water fish. There is considerable evidence that people who consume a diet rich in omega 3 oils from either fish or vegetable sources, have a significantly reduced risk of developing atherosclerosis.
