Hello, I am interested in working on your project. I can fluently speak and write English. As a sample(to evaluate my writing skills) I have enclosed a summary of a passage, I found in a book. I hope that you may find it adequate. A short summary of “The size of the universe”, written by Isaac Asimov, in his book “Asimov’s guide of physical science”. The measurement of the size of the universe has always been a trivial problem, even since the ancient greek era. The first scientific measurement of any cosmic distance was done by Eratosthenes of Cyrene in 240 B.C. He measured the curve of the earth’s surface, by taking measurements of the shadows produced in the two cities of Syenes and Cyrenes. As both of the cities were 500 miles apart, the diameter of the earth was calculated. It is interesting to note that even Christopher Columbus thought that earth was of only 3000 miles diameter as opposed to the 8000 miles figure given by Eratosthenes. It was not until 1521-3 that Magellan’s voyage around the world confirmed the figure calculated by Eratosthenes. Hipparchus of Nicaea, used the diameter of the earth to calculate the distance of the moon relative to the earth’s surface. The lunar eclipse provided the angle at which light from moon travelled to earth and thus the calculations approximated the distance to be about 24000 miles. In 1609 Johannes Kepler formulated two remarkable equations concerning the elliptical orbits of the planets and the time it took for the planets to travel around the sun. This alone proved to be a turning point in astronomy as now the distance of the planets circular motion could be easily calculated, and these equations gave birth to the method of measuring distance by parallax. To illustrate the method of parallax, cover on e of your eye and view your finger at an arm’s length. Now keeping your finger still cover the second eye and view the finger again. It would have moved a small distance. This is due to the distance between our eyes, the two observing points. For the objects which are greater in distance, the distance moved observed will become smaller. Although the concept proved to be vital in measuring the distance of the planets, but when it came to measuring the distance of the star, every attempt made was in vain. Even when the distance between the observers was 150 million miles ( this was achieved by measuring the change in position of the star at different time of the season, when earth was in a different position in the orbit). This proved to be a blessing in proving that stars were at least 8 billion miles away, in fact the distance was only proved in recent times when color spectroscopy was used in measuring the distance of the stars. Please feel free to contact me regarding any issue Baleegh
