Here is the sample of the term paper that I did recently: Female Genital Mutilation is a term which consists of procedures involving partial or total removal of the female genitalia carried out sometime between infancy and age 15 and occasionally on adult women. It started in Africa approximately two thousand years ago as a cultural practice. However, some religions have made it as a part of their practices. It is being practiced in Middle Eastern countries and African countries; and United States. It has been estimated that around ten million women and girls in the Middle East and in Africa and about ten thousand girls in United States are at risk of this practice. (http://www.fgmnetwork.org/intro/fgmintro.php). Female Genital Mutilation has no health benefits and harm young girls and women in numerous ways. Few complications may include severe pain, hemorrhage, septicemia, urine retention, open sores in the genital region, infections of the genital and surrounding areas and transmission of HIV virus which causes AIDS. Long term complications include infertility and child birth complications, cysts, delayed menarche, chronic pelvic complications, sexual frigidity and several other obstetric complications which may results in more surgeries. A mix of cultural, religious and social factors are said to be the causes of Female Genital Mutilation. It is considered as a way of making a girl clean, conformance to other people, family honor, and insurance of virginity, faithfulness to husband and protection from spells. Numerous efforts are in progress to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation as a practice. The United Nations, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization have started training midwives and creating awareness about the harmful effects of this practice in villages and remote areas. In United States, National Organization of Circumcision Information Resource Centers (NOCIRC) has founded the FGC Awareness and Education Project in August 1996 which provides training to health care professionals and organized International Symposium on Sexual Mutilations. The Research, Action and Information Network for Bodily Integrity of Women (RAINBO) have been conducting research on female genital mutilation. Congresswoman Patricia Shroeder passed a bill to outlaw FGC in the United States in September 1996. (Hosken, F. 1989).
