Who We Are Where.
Oswalde de Andrade once wrote,
When the Portuguese arrived
It was raining like crazy
He dressed the Indian in clothes
What a shame!
If only it had been a sunny day
The Indian would have undressed
The Portuguese.
This poem expresses displacement and the shedding of one’s person in order to become something else. It exemplifies the meaning of Latino Literature because in a few short phrases it sums up the idea of “undressing” oneself and putting on the clothes of another culture, both physically and metaphorically. Losing one’s identity, or never finding one rather, is an issue for many Latinos living in the United States, so therefore this theme can be found in almost any work of Latino Literature. There are a number of reasons why it is hard for the Latino to find an identity, such as stereotypes, racism, and the need for a language. Although there is an array of Latino Literature that involves this theme, among those are Borders and How To Tame A Wild Tongue written by Gloria Anzaldua, the film El Norte written by Gregory Nava, Alicia Valdes Rodriguez with The Dirty Girls Social Club, I am Joaquin by Corky Gonzales, A Countryless Woman by Ana Castillo, Ana Lydia Vega with Cloud Cover Caribbean, and Julia de Burgos, author of To Julia de Burgos. These authors exemplify the feelings of the Latino, displaced and confused in the United States, struggling to find an identity, a language, and a people with which to fully relate.
Gloria Anzaldua explores the themes of cultural identity and language in both Borders, and How to Tame A Wild Tongue. Anzaldua’s writing is unique because it switches between Spanish and English, in order to show the confusion that a Latino might face in choosing which language to use and when. Anzaldua points out that there is a definite need for “a language with terms that are neither espanol ni ingles, but both” (447). Most people can not imagine being scolded in the classroom for using the language they hear at home, but Anzaldua vividly recalls using Spanish on the playground at recess and how it was “good for three licks on the knuckles with a sharp ruler” (445). She writes, “Cuando vives en la frontera, people walk through you, the wind steals your voice” (216). By “en la frontera” Anzaldua means, when you live on the border, or more specifically when you live in between cultures, no one notices you or puts stock in your opinion, you have no voice. However, she then calls those people who are living on the “borders” to “live sin fronteras, be a crossroads.” The call to “be a crossroads” is really a powerful statement because it is asking people who feel as though everyone walks right through them, to be “the change they wish to see in the world” as Ghandi once said.
