| I will gladly do the project in C++, but would prefer to do the project in C#. Loss of speed is negligable using pinned variables and pointers within an "unsafe" context. Design details, in a nutshell:
Transmitting host:
1. Every n seconds (1-2 -- user defined?), store a 24bpp (bitmap) of the screen ("background image"). Send this image out to all connected clients as a JPEG with user-defined compression level, based on bandwidth requirements.
2. Every 50ms (20fps idealistic, 15fps realistic), locate the position of the mouse cursor and create a bounded rectangle (plus wiggle room on all sides) based on the previous cursor location and the new cursor location. Capture this smaller region, determine all changes based on integer comparisons (differences) between the new bitmap data and the "background image."
3. Compress this difference information using fast .ace compression and transmit the information to all connected clients (TCP/IP, although UDP and multicast could be substituted at risk of occasional dropped packets).
4. Every n seconds (1-2, or user-defined), perform a complete comparison of differences between the current screen and the "background image/last screen." Send the differences in compressed format. Locally, replace the old "background image" with the new screen capture. This takes care of all activities or screen updates that have occurred outside of the bounded mouse-movement rectangles in the last n seconds.
Client (note: as mentioned in your descriptions, roles can reverse with the click of a button):
1. Receives a initial JPEG image of the remote screen upon connection or when client/server roles reverse. Scale the image to window size (if written in C#, I would throw in the option of using nearest-neighbor, bilinear, or bicubic resizing (user-settable)).
2. When an update packet is received, decompress the packet that describes changes to the host's desktop/screen. Resize in proportion to the client's view of the remote screen. Apply changes and redraw the client's viewport of the host's desktop.
General notes: All resizing is taken care of on the client machine, unburdening the host. TCP/IP transmission would be done asynchronously (Again, this is more elegant and easier to manage if you use C#).
Difference detection will be done in 128-bit (16-byte) chunks using intrinsics and the XMM0-7 registers. Again, difference detection every 50-ms is limited to a small area of the screen determined by previous and current mouse position (plus wiggle room to begin showing menus, etc). A full screen capture and difference analysis is only done every 1-2 seconds (or user-settable -- 500ms is not unreasonable if the host has a fast computer).
Capture of data would be done (your choice) via: (1) first capture of original screen, updated and stored on each difference analysis when data is transmitted to the listeners, or (2) only on full screen diffs (1-2 sec intervals, or user-settable).
Conditions: Full source code available for your viewing pleasure at any time during the project, with a nicely packaged installation application and final XML documented source code delivered upon completion (est. 32 days for C++/C, 24 days if done in C#.NET). We both have full ownership of the source code and final product (i.e. I can use portions of the project in other consulting gigs, or even extend the functionality and distribute the executable).
I am new to GetAFreelancer.com, so my appologies in advance if the terms are not acceptable or comparable to other parties. I do quality work and know what I'm doing :) Contact me if you are interested. Thank you,
Owen Emlen
