Description

I want to be able to offer a genuine copy of memory map to work with a cheap CE car navigation device.

You can get it working by following these instructions. However, I want a program writing that will do all of the work enclosed in the instructions below so that a user can simply run both programs to get the software to work on their device.

Must work on windows desktops, either XP or Vista / Windows 7.

thought I would share some of my experiences with trying (and succeeding) to get Memory Map

charts to work properly on a cheap big-screen satnav. The Road Angel Adventurer offered by

Memory Map is fine, but very pricey (IMO) at £250 for a decidedly average 3.5" Satnav with

£40-worth of maps.

Penny shown for size (well, I thought it was a penny, but it's 5c which is the same size but

worth more)

If you want to do this you end up with a 4.3" MyGuide 4228 satnav (cost £65 from ebuyer, link)

with as much of the UK charted as you want, at £20 per chart. The charts are properly

calibrated CAA charts, exactly as you buy on paper. All in all, I have England, Scotland,

Wales, Northern Ireland and Northern France covered at 1:500000 for £40. They can be bought

here. Finally, it is advisable to buy a cheap 2GB SD card, but you can use the one that comes

with the satnav if you never want to use it as a road satnav in the future (advise against

that).

On your PC, you will need to install the software from the Memory Map disks, and also either

Vista or the latest ActiveSync from the Microsoft download site if using XP. Finally, you need

a program called ceregeditor to change one of the registry values on your satnav (free

download).

1. You need to download this file: http://mos001.dns-systems.net/MemoryMap/roadangel.zip
Extract the contents and using a card reader, put them into a file called MobileNavigator on

your (previously blank) SD card.

2. open the folder you have created above, and rename the file called Memory-Map_CE.exe as

mobilenavigator.exe

3. Using the Memory Map OS application on your PC (from the Memory Map CD's you ordered

earlier...), Select Map>Map List then select your CAA charts, and select Send to PDA. You can

then select the drive that your SD card is in, and upload them. You can do this using

ActiveSync, but it takes forever.

4. Connect your satnav to your PC using the supplied USB lead, and allow ActiveSync to connect

to it. In ActiveSync, Select Tools>Backup/Restore , and then make a backup (in case you mess

something up and want to get back to the start). Remove the supplied SD card from the satnav

(this holds all the road-based software) and insert your newly programmed SD card into the

satnav; turn it on and allow it to boot up. The press "Navigation". Memory Map will load up,

but you are not done yet. At this point, all your maps are viewable, but the GPS functions

will not work.

5. You now need to connect your satnav to the PC with the USB cable. ActiveSync will detect it

again. Using Memory Map OS on your PC, register your maps using the Help>Register License

command. Once you have done this, a message will appear on your PC screen saying that

registration details have been sent to the "PDA" or satnav in this case.

6. Download this file: http://mos001.dns-systems.net/MemoryMap/mmpnce.zip
Extract it to somewhere convenient on your PC, and rename the .exe file as mobilenavigator.exe
In ActiveSync, select "Explore", look in the folder called SDMMC and locate the file you

previously installed as mobilenavigator.exe in step 2. Drag your new mobilenavigator.exe into

this folder. When prompted whether you are sure, say yes. It will overwrite your previous

file, and this is what we want.

7. open CEregEditor, and select Connection>Connect. Using the left hand frame, navigate to

here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Memory-Map-OS-5\MMPocketNav\settings:GPS_params
Now change the value to read: 1,0,COM1: ,4,1,0,0,-,1,6,100,500
Exit CEregEditor. unplug your satnav from the USB cable. Press the reset button on the back of

the satnav with a paperclip.

You're done. That's it! Easy eh?

Little of this is my own work; it has come from many forums and sources, none of which offered

solutions that worked in their entirety (on this satnav, anyway, not tried it on any others).

This walkthrough works on the MyGuide 4228, and may well work on others, but I don't know

about that. No guarantees are offered, and you do this at your own risk. I recommend you use

ActiveSync to make a backup before you start, and by restoring this backup and using the

supplied SD card, you are back where you started.
