It sounds like either a gradient-based or morphological algorithm would be appropriate for your edge-detection application. I have experience and reusable code for both. Rotation is straightforward once the angle of rotation has been chosen. Estimating the angle can be done by searching for features (such as lines, blocks, etc). The Hough Transform is a typical way of doing this, but it's computationally intensive and often ill-conditioned. There are usually better ad hoc ways if you know what type of object you'll be imaging. I spent the last 4 months developing Matlab code to do similar processing on medical images... Hello If we play with applying differential filter and extract gradient vector we can find searched boundary,and "round" it to rectangle.I can test this on SuSe OS. The requirements given leave a lot of space open. A hand held camera is seldomly properly aligned to the optimum viewport. Light conditions are a great problem. Lots of moderns on market camera sensors have self adaption to light conditions at day light conditions. ... Many more question should be considered for picture quality and the range of objects or forms to be recognized. Edging is not the only information reduction method to be taken under consideration. A nice starting point is potrace, that is open source under inkscape and can be translated to mathematica. This is fast and allows for color separation and area filling. Do some test examples with it to make your requirements more clear. An image data base for a final examination if the code will do is also a very good basis for making the business.
