Description

I am planning to have a Vocabulary Learning Website. I have a database in excel containing over 6000 words and 10 sentences for each word. Each word has a marker determining its category like engineering, medicine, geography, and so on. Moreover, there will be a soun d file for each word. The database will not be a static one and will be updated regularly. I mean I need to add and edit entries daily. So it should be a dynamic one. Moreover, it should have both a student login and an admin login for me to update the database and see the student activity.

The main functions of the website will be like follows.

1. The user will buy membership through PayPal.
2. He will be given a password and username after completion of purchase
3. He will login to his page.
4. He will be given choices
a. Enter your own words (a list of words the user chooses--he might type them to a box one by one or import from a text file)
i. Study Just words
ii. Study Words and sentences
b. Study from categories (words for geography, engineering, medicine, etc.)
i. Study Just words
ii. Study Words and sentences
c. Test Your Learning
i. The words that the user learned so far will be shown on screen one-by-one, without any Turkish meaning; just the words. When he clicks next, he will be taken to the next word. The system will count the time passed until he clicks next. If he clicks next in less than 1 second, the word will be considered as “learned perfectly well”, if less than 2 seconds “learned well” and if it takes longer than 2 seconds, it will be regarded as “not well learned”. So, each word will be sent to a different list; namely “perfectly learned words”, “well learned words”, and “problematic words”. These lists will be shown on the progress page of the user. When he clicks on each list on his progress page, a page will show listing these words in sets of 30. The user will then be again able to study these words by clicking on the sound icons next to them. He will do the matching exercises again. If he wants to study these words in sentences, the system will find appropriate sentences for each word and give a test of 5 questions. Again, the user can do this test as many times as he can. Every time he does a sentence based test, the sentences will change. The system will take the next available sentence from the database, and won’t show the same sentences again. (There will be at least 10 sentences for each word in the database, so it would be enough for many activities).
5. For a and b above, the program will pick those words in the database
a. If it cannot find some words, it should report the list of these words to the admin on the admin page, thus I will be able to enter these words and the related sentences later.
6. A screen will show the list of words (it could find in the database) in numbers of 30 on each screen.
7. The words will have an icon next to each. It will be a “play” icon. When the user clicks on this icon, the appropriate sound file will play. Then the user will listen to it.
8. The user will be able to listen to the word of his choice, not all of the words in the 30 words set.
a. The system will then remember the words that he clicked to listen and consider all others as “known words”. It will send these known words to a list “known words”. This list will be accessible to the user on his progress page. It will be shown as a link showing the number of the words he already knows and didn’t need to learn. If he clicks on this number (let’s say 128—this number means he already knows 128 words) he will be taken to a page where he can view these words with the listening icons next to each word. If he thinks he doesn’t remember any of these words, he will be able to click on the “play” icons next to these words and the same process will start.
b. The words that he clicked to listen to will be sent to a list “Learned words”. This list will again be accessible to the user on his progress page. It will be shown as a link showing the number of the words he has learned so far.
i. These words will be the ones which he successfully matched in the following matching activity. All the words he matched incorrectly will be sent to the list “Problematic Words” list.
If he clicks on this number he will be taken to a page where he can view these words with listening icons next to each. If he thinks he doesn’t remember any of these words, he will again be able to click on the “play” icons next to these words and the same process will start again.
c. After completing a number of 20 words (the words he clicked to listen to—until this number is reached, the system will keep showing words in sets of 30 words per screen), he will be taken to a page where he will be able to match the English and Turkish explanations of these 20 words. He will practice matching as many times as he wishes. So, there should be a button “Practice again”. When he clicks on “practice again” the same set of 20 words will appear again, in jumbled order. When he thinks it is enough, he will click on “Next” which will take him to the next 30 words list. The process will continue like this until he quits or the words are finished in that category or the list of his choice he entered. During matching activity, the words he matched incorrectly will be sent to the “Problematic Words” list which he will be able to view later on his “Progress” page.
9. There should be an option on the main selection page for revision. The user should be able to revise the words he has learned so far. The words he hasn’t clicked to listen to will not be included. Only the words in his “Learned words” list will be shown to the student. He will be given the choice to do “matching activity” based on only words and their Turkish meanings and “matching activity” based on sentences and words to match with. If he chooses the former one, he will be given a set of 20 words and their Turkish meanings to match with. He can again practice this as many times as he can. So there should be a “practice again” button. After he thinks it is enough, he can click on “Next” button to go to the next 20 words. If he chooses to do the latter one, sentence matching, he will be given a set of 5 sentences to match with the words. He can again practice this as many times as he wishes. When he is done, he can click “Next” to go to the next set of 5 sentences and words. Every time he clicks on “Practice again” the system will show the next available sentence from the database, and won’t show the sentences user before.


10. I should be able to add words and sentences to the database both individually and by importing a huge number of words and sentences.

11. Types of exercises:
1. Matching words with their Turkish explanations like “fired kovulmak, atılmak”. There will be a set of 20 words for the matching activity.
2. Matching words with sentences: The words in the sentences will be left blank like “The employee was ______ after he argued with the boss. fired”. There will be a set of 5 sentences with 5 words to match with.

There might be some minor details and questions to come to mind to add, these are the basic elements of the program that we wish to have. To add, we need to have the pages very attractive in appearance, and fast in performance. It shouldn’t make the user wait between test page transitions.
