Once, I had to do an informative speech of sorts... Your http://allwomenstalk.com/50-chocolate-desserts/ example reminded me of it. Here are excerpts from the outline that I used(for the full content, email me): 1. TOPIC INTRO AND HISTORY Ghosts, goblins, witches, candy, pumpkins… What do you think of when you think of Halloween? The ritual that stands out most in my mind is that of trick-or-treating. Every October 31st, hundreds of thousands of children dress in costumes ranging from the cute and angelic to the ghoulish and demonic. Trick-or-treating is not a modern practice, however, but is actually linked to a ritual practiced over a thousand years ago, called Samhain (pronounced "sauin"). The word Halloween owes its origin to this ancient Celtic harvest feast, which occurred on the eve of the Celtic New Year, November 1 - a time when the departed souls were allowed to walk the earth. With the arrival of Christianity in Ireland in 43 AD, this became known as "All Souls Day" - a time to remember the dead. During the festivities, poor citizens would beg for food and would be given pastries called "soul cakes" in return for their promise to pray for the family's dead relatives. The practice, which was referred to as "going a-souling", was eventually adapted by children who would visit the houses in their neighborhood. They would receive ale, food, and money for their efforts - a practice that eventually became today's "trick-or-treat" tradition. Tonight, I would like to show you how to make a “soul cake”, better known as “Barmbrack”, a food still traditionally eaten on All Hallow’s Eve. 2. HOW TO MAKE BARMBRACK a. Handout b. Demonstration In a medium bowl, sift together the 3 cups flour, 1 teaspoon nutmeg, and ½ teaspoon salt. With a pastry cutter or a fork, blend in ¼ cup butter until it resembles coarse crumbs. In a separate bowl, combine ¾ ounce yeast with 1 teaspoon of the sugar. Add the remaining sugar (appx. 11 2/3 tablespoons) to the flour mixture and blend well. In a saucepan over medium heat, heat 1 ¼ cup milk to just below boiling then add to the yeast and sugar. Stir in the all but a tablespoon of the eggs and add to the dry ingredients (reserve a tablespoon for use as a glaze). Knead lightly to produce an elastic dough. Fold in 1 ½ cup currants, 1 ½ cup golden raisins, & 1 cup mixed fruit peel (fruit cake mix). Transfer to a well-greased 8-inch round cake pan. Cover with a clean cloth and leave in a warm place to rise (it should double in size in about 1 hour.) Preheat oven to 400°F. Brush the top of the brack with a beaten egg to glaze. Bake until golden, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean, 50 to 60 minutes. 3. CONCLUSION. All of these rituals find their origins and historical significance, over the course of 3000 years, in the religion of old Ireland - the religion of Druidism. I hope you found the making of Barmbrack and the history that accompanies the ritual as interesting as I did. Please feel free to enjoy the Halloween treats of both past and present and read some additional materials I have brought on the history of the jack o’ lantern.
